Receiving plaques and trophies were the top male and female
athletes in all of the youth sports programs offered on the Northern portion of
the Island. Awards were presented for everything from windsurfing, basketball,
volleyball, football and fencing to roller skating.
In all, more than 70 children were honored
and encouraged to continue their good work.
To warrant enforcement of the rules, there
will be an addition to the game's lexicon: the Game Operations Technical
Committee, which will be responsible for reporting pitchers at the limit to the
umpire-in-chief, who will have the power to order pitching changes.
Parents, friends and just about every
elected official on the French Side attended the ceremony.
Each young star was called on stage by name.
Elected officials took turns handing out the awards and shaking hands with the
young stars, as the large gathering applauded and photographs snapped off,
picture after picture.
The St. Martin sports department must be
commended on their efforts to encourage the youth to stay healthy and fit.
After all the children had received their
awards, the presidents of the various youth sports organizations that volunteer
their time to organize the programs were called forward and were awarded
plaques for their dedication to the welfare of the community.
The Director of Sports said it best. Too
often we honor our heroes when they have passed away. We should honor our
heroes when they are alive and can appreciate the praise.
